World Health Day is celebrated each year, on April 7th, to commemorate the founding of the World Health Organization (WHO) and to draw worldwide awareness to a public health priority. Since its inception in 1948, the World Health Organization has been advocating for universal healthcare, monitoring public health risks, coordinating responses to health emergencies, and promoting human health and wellbeing.
The WHO has deemed 2020 as the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife. What better time to highlight the current status of the largest cadre of healthcare workers that exist today – nurses, as we navigate the current COVID-19 Pandemic. Despite the fear we all face surrounding exposure to the virus, nurses (along with other health care workers) are still showing up to work – risking direct exposure to care for the wounded, despite many of them unable to even wear the proper PPE due to a lack of supplies.
CDR MAGUIRE SALUTES NURSES AROUND THE GLOBE!
WE SEE YOUR HARD WORK, YOUR BRAVERY AND YOUR DEDICATION,
AND WE APPRECIATE YOU!!
CDR Maguire would also like to recognize the noble efforts of the World Health Organization to support unity during this time of crisis.
In response to the Coronavirus, The World Health Organization has bought and shipped PPE to 74 countries, provided technical guidance and advice to the public, strengthened laboratory capacity, and launched a global treatment trial.
On March 18th, the WHO launched SOLIDARITY, a global treatment trial created to determine if any of the four most promising treatments for COVID-19 can save lives. Due to treatments from scratch requiring years to develop and produce, WHO researchers are attempting to repurpose drugs that have already been approved for other illnesses.
SOLIDARITY trial therapies are:
- An experimental antiviral compound called emdesivir
- The malaria medications chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine
- The combination of two HIV drugs, lopinavir and ritonavir
- Lopinavir and ritonavir (HIV drugs) plus interferon-beta, an immune system messenger that can help cripple viruses
The attempt to rapidly collect robust scientific data, during a pandemic, is not an easy task. The WHO has designed this trial with an easy enrollment process, so that health care workers can focus on patient care and not on the trial.
The goal is to determine a drug, or drug combinations, that slow or kill the novel coronavirus so that we can learn how to save patient lives, reduce severe effects for vulnerable people, and provide those treatments to healthcare workers as preventive protection.
As the trial data becomes available, the monitoring board will review results, at various intervals, and decide if any treatments are effective or if any can be dropped. It will take thousands of patient’s data to come to conclusive evidence for effective treatment, however, since this trial is done by randomized evidence, versus double-blind, researchers will get answers more quickly than usual, which is important due to the severity of this global epidemic.
We wish good health for all people in the world. Even though we are all different, in the end, we are all human. In this time of physical isolation and quarantine, we must metaphorically come together as one people, for the betterment of humanity. Today, we celebrate the World Health Organization, as well as nurses around the world!
WHAT’S NEXT?
Once we are able to get a handle on the pandemic crisis, the focus will shift to rebuilding economies around the world, including here in the United States. The United States government has put several programs in place to help rebuild our economy, such as the FEMA Public Assistance Program, which provides local communities with up to 75% reimbursement for additional costs incurred as a result of the COVID-19 National Emergency Declaration.
CDR Maguire’s Emergency Management Division is a consulting firm that helps clients prepare for and recover from disasters. We are here to support and work with our clients, to help mitigate the recovery process for communities throughout the nation. We are currently working with local governments in Kentucky and Florida on their COVID-19 Recovery Processes. We are proud to say that CDR Maguire has helped communities get back to their new normal faster than others.
